With the release of Patch 1.7 yesterday, Trion Worlds has introduced what it is calling RIFT Lite, which allows players new and old to experience the game from levels 1-20 for free. This is not a free-to-play payment model conversion but more of an extended free-trial similar to what Blizzard recently introduced into World of Warcraft.

Trion has been clear in its statements that they have no intentions of taking RIFT F2P and that the game is doing well as a subscription game. Trion CCO and RIFT Executive Producer Scott Hartsman had this to say in regards to RIFT Lite, “In the past ten months, RIFT has evolved at a breakneck pace, through seven massive updates that set new expectations for live MMOs, in features, in content, and in service. We think a Lite edition with no time limit is the best way for players to see what an amazing experience RIFT continues to be.”

Patch 1.7: ‘Carnival of the Ascended’ continues RIFT‘s trend of frequent content updates and includes PvP improvements, Expert Dungeons changes, the River of Souls Chronicle, and more. The full patch notes can be found on the official forums.

Story is often not the central element of MMOs. Sure, there is usually some story there if you take the time to read it, but most of the time it is not important enough for us to worry about why it is we are running around doing the quests we have been tasked with completing. I would be bold enough to venture a guess that the majority of MMO players simply skim the quest text box, looking mainly for the task summary and rewards given.

With the release of Star Wars: The Old Republic, BioWare took storytelling in MMOs to a new level. The majority of quests and NPC interactions take place in small cut-scenes with voice acting that, for the most part, is quite well done. For some side quests I do still find myself hitting the space bar to skip the voice-acted interaction, particularly in the parts where the person I am speaking with uses some sort of alien language, but the class quest scenes and major story-line arcs for each planet have me enthralled.

Later this year BioWare is set to release Mass Effect 3, and potentially change the way you play video games. Yes, it is a single-player RPG, but what makes it relevant to this article is the three game modes available to choose from in the game. Currently being called Story Mode, Action Mode, and RPG Mode, Mass Effect 3 will allow players to customize their gameplay experience to their liking.

Action Mode is “for those who want to emphasise action and combat and minimize story management,” and will set automatic replies in conversation and a normal difficulty.

Story Mode, as you can probably guess, is “for those who want to emphasize story immersion and minimize combat pressure.” Story mode will set manually-selectable replies in conversation and a minimal combat difficulty.

RPG Mode is a balance of both Action and Story, presenting the game as it would normally be played.

Tin foil hat time: Imagine the ability, if you so choose, to minimize combat and primarily participate in an interactive narrative in which you make the choices, maybe even solve some puzzles, and simply experience a story in an MMO. Instead of killing 20 rakghouls you might have to figure out what is causing the plague that creates them through investigation and deduction. It could be a separate game experience, or simply allow players to witness a storyline without the hours of grinding out quest.

Yeh the first one is cool, but the 200th one? Not so much.

Of course, here is where the theory begins to fall apart, because an MMO wants that monthly subscription, and if they let you just blow through the best story elements, there’s nothing to keep you there month after month. But, that’s how current MMOs are set up. What if one was designed from the ground up to be an interactive story, much like the “choose your adventure” books many of us loved as kids, and your monthly subscription kept new content coming out on a consistent basis (a guy can dream). At that point would it even still be considered an MMO, and what would the developers need to do in order to maintain that MMO status?

Personally I envision an MMO version of LA Noire, where my friends and I work together to solve crimes and take down the big-bads in town. Take out the parts where you’re chasing down a bad guy or shooting at people every three minutes, and concentrate on the characters, their interactions, and outcomes from those interactions. And no, I don’t want to pick up every item in the room for no reason and rotate it around either. Imagine the amount of story that could be written and voice acted for the costs that were incurred implementing the face-capture technique. Sure, that was pretty cool, but at the end of the day it didn’t help that game overcome the aspects that were lacking.

I actually do enjoy experiencing combat in MMOs, gaining new abilities and finding new ways to defeat my enemies. Questing overall can be tedious and repetitive, but combat itself isn’t a bad thing. It’s the going out and shooting rat after rat, wolf after wolf, and cultist after cultist that destroys the enjoyment in MMO combat, and I can see why some people simply do not enjoy playing their way through an MMO. How many new players could be drawn into the MMO genre if they did not have to grind it out, but could instead take part in a story?

Undoubtedly there are tons of people who are going to play Story Mode in Mass Effect 3, and there are plenty of people who would love to just experience the stories in Star Wars: The Old Republic. For now this mode is more suited for single-player RPG’s, but would you be interested in playing an interactive story MMO, and if so, what features would need to be present to keep you interested for the long term?

News has once again began to flow from ArenaNet regarding their highly anticipated MMO, Guild Wars 2. It all started this past Monday with a blog post from ArenaNet President Mike O’Brien welcoming players to the year of the dragon. In the article O’Brien stated that GW2′s initial testing phase had been completed, and that they would now begin slowly ramping up to larger testing events starting in February with invites to select press members. Sometime between March and April they will begin more extensive testing invites, and anticipate that many players anxious to get a look at the game will get their chance.

They followed this news up with a look at the last remnants of an ancient society of giants known as the Jotun, who may have existed before the human gods.

Over the centuries of their existence, the jotun have fallen far from their state of grace, losing command of technology and magic they once utilized, and remembering their place as kings of the land only in legend and story.

You can check out the entire Jotun article on the official ArenaNet Blog

All-in-all ArenaNet appears to gearing up for what should prove to be a pretty epic Guild Wars 2 release. The developer is promising big things in its upcoming MMO, and many players are excited to see if they can deliver on those promises. The Year of the Dragon could very well turn out to be a huge one for ArenaNet.

Australia’s Bubble Gum Interactive announced Wednesday the launch of their first MMO product, Little Space Heroes. As implied by the name of the game, Little Space Heroes’ target market is children. This browser-based MMO is free-to-play and story driven, capturing imaginations with grand intergalactic adventures.

Like many free-to-play games, there is the opportunity for a parent to upgrade membership to a premium account. It is not entirely clear what the free-to-play membership features, however, pay-to-play accounts will have access to events, unlimited friends, greater character customization opportunities and more. The Web site, curiously, does not readily list the cost for pay-to-play, either.

It’s not every day when you hear that a popular MMO-based character will get killed off, but that is exactly what NCSoft is doing in 2012. According to this teaser, Statesman, the protector of Paragon City, will meet his match in battle and will pass onto whatever great beyond a comic hero goes to. Statesman, you may recall, was the alter ego of former City of Heroes/Cryptic honco Jack Emmert. The character has been part of City of Heroes lore since the beginning. Heck, I still have my Statesman HeroClix figurine!

This storyline will begin in January 2012, and will be free and fully available to VIP account holders.

The question is, will Statesman wind up really being alive somewhere down the line like other killed-off comic book heroes?

Do you play City of Heroes/City of Villains? How do you feel about the loss of Statesman?

If you play Aion on one of NCSoft’s European servers, mark your calendar. Come February 2012, Aion will join the free-to-play field. Joining forces with Gameforge, a German-based publisher, NCSoft will open up the fields of Atreia, which, by their own admission, has been pretty anemic of late when it comes to players:

In the last few months the lands in Atreia have become more and more deserted. We want to reinvigorate the world of Aion and attract new adventurers to the towns to take to the skies as Daevas.

Aion players will not be affected by this change of service and change in publisher. At this time, you’ll still have to pay-to-play and admire your wings.

Are you an Aion player? How do you feel about the change of service, and how it affects only European players?

The official Star Trek Online Web site has been updated with a new developer blog. Penned by Content Designer Charles Gray, the blog details the new invasion zone playing out on Tribble, Star Trek Online’s test server:

The Borg are taking advantage of all the new releases happening on Tribble, and a distracted player base, to launch a full scale invasion of the planet Defera! Both Starfleet and the Klingon Defense Force have responded by sending officers to the planet in an attempt to prevent the Borg from fully assimilating the world and the knowledge it contains.

The Defera Invasion zone is a new event that pits players against the Borg in different situations scattered throughout the planet’s vast and varied landscape. There are four different areas of conflict on the map, each with its own range of difficulties. Missions vary in difficulty from solo play to requiring a 5 member team to succeed.

The event also contents new drops, mission rewards, and craftable items. To access the event zone, simply head to either the Defera Visitors Center or Defera System in the Deferi Sector of the Orellius Sector Block during mission hours. If an event is not running, you can still access the area’s crafting vendors and roam the zone freely. The event will run for two hours every four hours while it’s in testing.

Are you going to check out this new Borg event?

Bulgarian game developer Masthead Studios has announced that sci-fi MMO Earthrise will change to a free-to-play game beginning December 1, 2011. The reason? Masthead does not feel that the quality of the game is up-to-snuff:

We decided to let all our players [experience] unlimited gaming until we all are satisfied with the experience in our game. At the moment Earthrise features some of the best visuals, content, and gameplay of all sci-fi MMOs on the market. However it is missing polish and has annoyances that spoil the fun in the game. We are learning from our experience and that is why we will remove monthly charges until we bring the game to a quality state that is satisfactory to us and our players”, said Atanas Atanasov, CEO of Masthead Studios.

Meanwhile Earthrise will be used as a test for the new free-2-play model and Masthead will limit the creation of new accounts. Invitations will be sent to selected new players and a new sign-up option will be provided. All existing subscribers will receive a number of invitations to bring their friends in the game.

Last August, Masthead dropped the monthly fee for Earthrise by a whopping 60%.

Warcraft’s 1% Richest Control Top 24%

The wealth distribution is a huge topic in the real world. Both countries that I’ve lived in, the US and China, are teeming with its fair share of problems. Luckily one demographer/World of Warcraft enthusiast conducted a survey about the income inequality within Azeroth.

The results of his survey of nearly 2,500 players—with an admittedly great margin of error—is that the wealthiest one percent in the game control 24.25 percent of its gold.

In America, the figure is around the richest 1 percent have 40 percent of the wealth, which would seem to be a greater disparity. However, the lower 75 percent of World of Warcraft players control just 14 percent of the game’s gold. That leads the survey taker to conclude that:

The whole ingame economic system is an extremely top-heavy one, leaving large sums of gold sitting idle in the top players pockets kept isolated from contributing to the economy, which is especially detrimental if one considers that a server economy is the simple flow of gold and materials. One can argue however that by holding such large sums of gold such players can more easily influence and correct markets, keep inflation in check by keeping the sums of gold out of the hands of the masses, and provide buyers for big ticket items such as TCG Mounts.
