In an interesting coincidence of timing, on the very same day we published our interview with Matt Firor, newly hired head of ZeniMax Online studios, it was announced that ZeniMax Media has secured $300,000,000 in investment funding:
ZeniMax and Bethesda, creator of 2006′s standout RPG The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, will be using the funds from Providence Equity Partners for “future growth, increased game development and publishing, facilitation of acquisitions, and financing of massively multiplayer online games.”
The investment follows news this summer of the formation of Rockville, Md.-based ZeniMax Online, a dedicated MMO division headed up by former Mythic producer Matt Firor, whose work includes Dark Age of Camelot. ZeniMax Online’s project is currently under wraps.
How much of this money is being directed into the MMO division is, obviously, what we would be most interested in knowing. Even half that amount could produce anywhere from two MMOs (at WoW rates) to fifteen of them (at LOTRO rates).
