Is World of Warcraft Dying?

In an article posted by the Orange County Register of all places, Ian Hamilton gives his opinions about how the subscriber base might be in trouble.

“World of Warcraft” is Blizzard’s biggest moneymaker. It was first released in 2004 and has been expanded every few years with a new game release. Players spend around $15 per month to immerse themselves in its online world and, according to Blizzard, a record 12 million people subscribed to the game around the time of the last expansion in December 2010, “Cataclysm.” However, there are signs interest in subscribing to “WoW” is waning and an alternative model might be needed. Blizzard reported the number of subscribers dropped to 11.1 million in June this year and the company made the opening levels of the game free to play in hopes of hooking newbies into becoming subscribers. Blizzard has been prepping a new massively multiplayer game but no details are known about it.

I really don’t think an alternative model is necessary. I think Blizzard has succeeding in revitalizing interest and although subscribers may be down (it has been a few years now) doing things such as making the opening levels free (which has always been done with the trial account), in addition to rewarding players for making Diablo III free to people who subscribe for a year just shows their tenacity. Also, in the past, Blizzard has done a kind of “either or” with the expansions when it comes to either races or classes. It’s been alternating since the first expansion. First new races, and then with the next expansion a new class, and with Cataclysm two more new races and with the next expansion which I’ll be calling “Your Loss, China” they’re introducing both a new class and a new race, the twist is that the new race can choose whether it wants to be Alliance or Horde. It seems to me that World of Warcraft is going to keep going strong until they feel like stopping and as long as the quality keeps on getting  hammered out, I don’t see anything but fluctuations on the horizon.
