WoW for the blind?

Well maybe not World of Warcraft for the blind, not yet anyway, maybe one day though. Students at IBM in Ireland are working on a project called “Accessibility In Virtual Worlds”. The project which is still in a, “proof of concept” stage makes use of 3D sound to create a sense of space. The students are using Active Worlds Online as their test bed because it allows them more flexibility than Second Life. The system makes use of audio cues, such as leaves rustling for a tree or a verbal description of an object as the user gets nearer. For more details head over to the BBC’s website.
